Bio Richard Jernigan Richard Jernigan is a Dallas-based filmmaker who has created panoramic images since 2002.
Statement: Panoramic photography is a stubborn exercise in seeing. First, there's the equipment. Panoramic cameras such as the Noblex present several restrictions: a fixed lens, a 140- degree angle of view, slower than normal exposure times, minimal close-up capability, the need for a tripod. In most instances, the camera needs to be perfectly level, as the bending of the horizon lineupward or downward is typically more of a distraction than a compelling framing decision. Regardless, these technical limitations make the process of shooting more engrossing. A dominant object is minimized by the distorted, but natural, wide-angle frame. I find myself having to get to get very close to my subjects, while the lens loses focus at less than a meter. There’s a meditative interplay between objects, placement, light, and composition. The goal is to make these things speak. |
